There's over 500 billion people on Starbase 65, and it's not even the largest station in the cyberstar wastes. There's too many people to know, too many to list, almost too many to comprehend. Still, some of them end up involved in the stories we tell with this game. You might include some of these characters in the stories your group tells, or you might just use them as inspirations.

Betty Zero

Born Wèi Shū Xīn (魏舒昕) to parents who ran a speakeasy in Stardust, a free zone that doesn't exist anymore. If there's one truth to Betty that everyone knows, it's that she's angry. She hates corporations, hates fascists, hates the constant murders being committed throughout space, hates the way the general public ignores it, and hates herself for not doing enough to change things.

Most of her infancy and childhood was spent in her parents' speakeasy, where they could look after her. When Stardust was wiped out to meet corporate quarterly projections, little Shū Xīn's parents died with it. She's never forgotten the screams, and she still dreams about her mother's shredded body.

From there it's a story of survival that Betty never talks about publicly, but eventually she met Nadine and Jana Drechsler. Her friendship with the Drechsler sisters was immediate, and the three of them learned how to survive together. The twins' love of music was already established, and they were delighted to find out Shū Xīn had a great singing voice. From there it was a quick hop to starting their own LiVid account and streaming their jam sessions to anyone that wanted to watch. They tried lots of different things before landing on a kind of digital punk with screaming vocals built around jazz melodies. Their channel name, Betty Zero and the Starfighters, originally meant nothing at all, but once they started building a fanbase it stuck and Wèi Shū Xīn became Betty Zero.

Their fanbase grew quickly, they self-released their first album, which earned them a bounty increase for releasing art outside corporate regulation. They immediately decided this was the right path and have never signed with a label. Their second album got even more attention, their fanbase started turning lucrative, and the girls realized they had a legitmate career option.

With her newfound money, Betty started solving a lot of her personal struggles. She'd always suffered from seizures, as well as spinal and musculature difficulties that made it difficult to stand for long periods of time. She had an exoskeleton installed because it was cheap, which allowed her to stand and perform entire concerts. This gave the band even more options, and their fanbase started increasing exponentially.

Betty's most famous augmentation however, isn't really cybernetics at all. Prone to seizures her whole life, the intense light shows her band used for concerts risked triggering her on stage, so she spontaneously just used a blindfold to protect herself while singing. The blindfold fascinated audiences, and it rapidly became such a known part of their performances that it just became Betty's new norm. Fans continued coming in, their illegal album sales skyrocketed alongside their crowdfunding subs, and suddenly the girls had Real Money.

With her share of the money, Betty doubled down on cybernetics. She hates being meat, even more than she hates being alive, so she did what she could to fix it. Now Betty changes her body the way other people change clothes; different limbs, different genitals, a rotating collection of supportive cybernetic prosthetics, and more.

The band's third album, "Burn Starfire," was their true breakout, from which the title track is still their most famous song. It was also the era during which Betty's appearance was at its peak rebellion against the burden of being physical and society's expectations of what she should be (dubbed "Starfire Betty"). She had her arms replaced with mirrored silver cybernetics, but she also had four additional arms installed in her back, for a total of six, with which she created hypnotic dances. She also had three breasts, elongated legs, a penis, vagina, glittering silver ram horns, fangs, claws, and she often performed entirely naked so the audience could see the full picture. Since then, performing nude has become a normal part of Betty's art.

More recently, Betty has taken to simpler looks. She's got a typical number of arms, her limbs are all their typical length. Her exoskeleton is still there, but these days it looks more like she's simply wearing some supportive metal along her back and legs. She still changes her genitals and her chest regularly, she still enjoys having glitter in her skin, but for the most part she looks almost like a regluar person (except for the occasional horns, spikes, fangs, etc).

Fans have taken to calling these looks "Simple Betty 3," "Simple Betty 4," and so on. Of course there's a section of her fans who think Betty's gone soft and sold out, especially since the band's sales really picked up once Betty started looking a little less extreme. Most of her fans however, especially her older ones, know that Betty's more simple looks are because it lets her spend time with her girlfriend, Ruby Violet.

What her fans don't know, what almost no one knows except Ruby, Nadine, and Jana, is that Betty is also a skilled NetNinja. Between albums and tours she spends a lot of time in deepVR. She steals corporate data, fucks with their servers and plans, but mostly she steals from them. Everything she steals goes directly to people in Shelby, the victims of corporate genocide, or anyone else who needs help.

Ruby Violet

Born in the deepest, darkest parts of SB65, Ruby's life should have been short and unremarked. Instead, she's now a celebrated local celebrity known as much for knocking heads as slutting her way through a list of gangsters' wives.

When she was little her family got caught by meatscavs; Ruby and her little brother only barely escaped being butchered alongside their parents. They would have starved in the dark or been crushed by machinery, if Ruby hadn't stumbled across a secret metting between Crows and the Minegishi family. Their secret meeting crashed by two little kids, the gangsters were ready to kill, but Ruby talked her way into a job.

The Crows put Ruby to work running supplies and messages between speakeasies and warehouses, while Minegishi hired her little brother Kore to do the same. They kept in touch, but as the years passed and the gangs became hostile to each other, Ruby lost touch with her brother. She learned to fight, learned to shoot, lifted weights, learned how to give and take a hit, and earned herself a place as a soldier for the Crows. She even replaced her arms with powerful cybernetics so she could hit harder, break through barriers, ignore weapon recoil, and more. She made herself indespensible, and the Crows rewarded her with money, support, and more of a family than she'd ever had.

Her newfound life was so different from her childhood that sometimes she could barely comprehend. Even her small, meager apartment in the Street Levels was a palace compared to living in maintenance crawlways between machinery. Ruby never forgot those crawlways, the roving meatscav gangs, losing friends in trash chutes, and the endless freezing cold. Now that she was strong, with a growing reputation for violence, she put it to use outside her duties for the Crows. She still spends a lot of time working as security for Crow speakeasies, guarding deliveries, and even fighting gang wars, but she also actively protects people in her neighborhood. Most of the people around her apartment know they can turn to her if anyone threatens them, and that she hates bullies and scavs with a passion. "You need help, call Ruby," is common advice.

Granted, a lot of her reputation (and even her place in the Crows) is resting on shaky ground because she can't stop fucking other people's wives. Ruby has always loved women, and they have always loved her back, but unfortunately she has a special weak spot for married women and it's gotten her into plenty of trouble. She's notorious at parties and other social functions, to the point where her bosses actively try to keep her busy and away from their wives.

Besides that though, Ruby is best known for being one of the toughest people in her neighborhood, possibly even one of the toughest in Shelby. She's a crack shot with her twin Lyra 49A pistols, each custom made with her initials on their handles. Even without them though, she can punch her way through a locked hatch or some ugly dude who thinks he's tough. Her most famous fight was against an actual mech, sent into Crow territory by a rival gang, which she ended up ripping apart with just her hands. She's tough as shit, or she's lucky as hell; all that matters is that, where most people get pulped in an instant, Ruby's still standing.

Since she met Betty, Ruby has admittedly started being a little more careful. She still fucks around, but she's less prone to taking risks in a fight because she wants to make sure she comes home to her girl. She's also taken to providing security when Betty performs, though more often she's back stage screaming, cheering, and singing along like an idiot.
